Founded in 1885, a unique profession developed in Ybor City, and cultural leaders known as “Lectors” emerged. To stay entertained on shift, historic cigar factory workers would pay individuals to read books, newspapers and magazines aloud. These individuals eventually became known as Lectors and evolved into highly respected influential leaders who imparted new ideas. Today, Lector 85 exists to celebrate Ybor’s roots while providing a space for a new generation of cultural leaders to emerge.
